I know, isn't it great? I do have a confession to make, though. Hungary, I was unfaithful to you and got into an online arguement with another man yesterday. Could you find it in your heart to forgive me for my infidelity/autism?
De nada, friend
I never got into Alcest. Are they any good? I didn't know about the other groups, I suppose I know what I'm going to check out later today, thank you

Idk, from what I read of opinions, a lot of people like one album but not the others. They vary in style a bit, and several in last case (Kodama) he went just the opposite direction from what he has stated he wants to do with the last album (Shelter) and he doesn't care what fans think about it (many of them hated it).
But idk, so far I have liked all the albums. There's some songs that stand out a lot for me (Sur l'océan couleur de fer, Les Voyages de l'Âme, Éclosion), but even overall it's I'd say one of my fav bands.
Les Discrets has two dark shoegaze albums similar to Amesoeurs, and one dark synth album. I don't know what I think of the last album Prédateurs, it has really nice atmosphere but it simply doesn't feel like it has enough material for a whole album.
Peste Noire is a nationalist black metal band. I'd recommend to start with the self-titled album.

>I know, isn't it great?
Nod really. Music which is great despite it's unpleasantness do exists, many times the talent and knowledge which was put into it has to be appreciated. But in this case that music is just shit and not the shit.

Bernd 01/14/2018 (Sun) 21:21:11 [Preview] No.13062 del
Peste Noire is nationalist, you say? Shame I can't show them to RAC Bernd, the dude would cream his pants.

Yeah, I guess I'll put Alcest on my list, too. I am very jaded with big-name acts but sounds like the guy isn't a people pleaser, I appreciate such a mindset.
It's not the kind of thing that you can just pick up and listen to, I'll give you that. But there is a certain state of mind where agony in music is a welcome thing. Different tastes I suppose.

Look, if these gay jokes are making you uncomfortable I'll stop. I don't chase straight guys and I'm not out to harass you, either.

Sames here.

Sames except everything was abandoned, closed down, left for decay and forgotten. Maybe some governmental buildings has shelters. Also the metro in Budapest.

>the aggressors will think of us as a irrelevant target, not worthy of nuking.
Hungary has left with nothing with strategical value with the exception of Paks NPP, maybe the nuclear powers have fresh info on us. I know on the old American target lists they had all major towns with notable industry and military installations. Now we have neither. Would be fun to be annihilated because of nothing.

What might help is guessing stuff that could be targeted (the old target list mentioned above helps), and knowing blast radii, terrain and wind patterns.

Ooo, I got the chills. I liek female musicians especially drummers and guitarists. And not half bad they're playing.

>You know, they could always fire some nukes from nato territory in europ so it could be even less time.

This is why INF treaty was signed in late 80-s. Now it is forbidden to make medium range missiles that can be placed in Europe (or Latin America/Cuba for USSR). Treaty works only on USSR/Russia and USA though, and doesn't cover sea-based missiles (that is why Tomahawks and their Russian based alternatives are used only on ships or subs).

In Russia now many people think that Gorbachev was a traitor. There is often cited story about OTR-23 "Oka" (SS-23) that wasn't fully qualified to be in this treaty but dismantled because "good will" of Gorbachev, and this is a treason etc. But in reality it was USSR who needed this treaty, not USA, because USA can't be easily reached from medium range, and USSR is very vulnerable because of Europe. But don't tell this to modern Russian "patriots", they wouldn't believe you anyway.

And looks like now there is process to dismantle the treaty from both sides. It isn't a good thing at all, although really it is mostly about China and other powers, who have no such restrictions and can do anything, not about Russia/USA relations.

>Imagine my situation when my country is pretty much bordering russia

You are in better position I guess. Russia won't bomb you much. Yes, you may expect some nuclear fallout, destruction of infrastructure and some burning cities, but it wouldn't be inevitable death of millions in 20 minutes, when all major cities and their neighborhoods are targeted by thousand of missiles. I think people who don't live close to military bases will be relatively ok in nuclear conflict in Eastern Europe.

I've already mentioned the book titled On Killing - The Psychological Cost of Learning to Kill in War and Society by Dave Grossman (Lt. Col. of US Army). It gave some food for thought and I'm planning to write some of my speculation.

But what did the author write? Let's summarize.
He starts with the observation that most men has a natural resistance to kill (only 2% of men - those who have "predisposition toward aggressive psychopathic personality" - can go on killing without becoming a nervous wreck). This resistance is so high that even at times that our life is directly threatened (like others shoot at us) still difficult to overcome it. This resistance is the reason why infantry fire was so embarrassingly ineffective in the past 300 years - with the exception of machine guns - despite the fact that infantry weaponry (rifles) are reliable and accurate enough to cause massive losses among the enemy.
The author gives examples and sources, such as a Prussian experiment in the late 18th century, several reports and notices from several authors during 19-20th centuries (American, French, Israeli etc.), and an interesting work by a US Army historian who (and his coworkers) made mass interviews with fighting GIs during and after WWII. Also he cites his own conversation with veterans of WWII and Vietnam.
He gives new ideas on what's really happening on the battlefield. He compliments the widely known fight-or-flight model with two other options: in reality the soldiers can fight, posture, submit or flight. And most soldiers choose the second option.
Then he ponders on what enables killing (I'm gonna write more about this later) and how modern (post-WWII) armies achieve this. Then he compares these methods with the ways of contemporary mass media. His conlcusion is (after pointing out the exponential rise of violent crimes) that mass media has an undesirable effect on society.

What interesting for me is this resistance, and the enabling part. These things are actually give an entirely new way of looking warfare, and how and why battles were won.
For example the part officers (the demanding authority to kill) play in the enabling. When people (professional historians, history pros and other armchair generals) comparing the Hellenic phalanx with Roman manipulus and why the latter was more successful they compare everything but the officers. In the phalanx he's only one among those who stand in line and do the poking with pikes, but a Roman officer is one outside the formation and pressuring the soldiers to kill. It makes a huge difference if someone shouting in your ears "stab! stab! stab!" and generally pressuring you to kill. Especially if this one person is an exemplary one, a veteran whose skill in killing surpasses all the others in that particular unit. However noone talks about this because noone thinks about it.

I'll continue this sometimes, maybe only next weekend, we'll see. If you wish to read the book you can probably find it on libgen.

''A.D. 1025. This year went King Knute to Denmark with a fleet to the holm by the holy river; where against him came Ulf and Eglaf, with a very large force both by land and sea, from Sweden. There were very many men lost on the side of King Knute, both of Danish and English; and the Swedes had possession of the field of battle.
A.D. 1030. This year returned King Olave into Norway; but the people gathered together against him, and fought against him; and he was there slain, in Norway, by his own people, and was afterwards canonised.
A.D. 1067. ... he child Edric and the Britons were unsettled this year, and fought with the castlemen at Hereford, and did them much harm. ... they advanced upon Somersetshire, and there went up; and Ednoth, master of the horse, fought with them; but he was there slain, and many good men on either side; and those that were left departed thence.
A.D. 1079. ... This year, therefore, Robert fought with his father, without Normandy, by a castle called Gerberoy; and wounded him in the hand; and his horse, that he sat upon, was killed under him; and he that brought him another was killed there right with a dart. That was Tookie Wiggodson. Many were there slain, and also taken.
A.D. 1095. ... Then, soon after that the king was gone south, went the earl one night out of Bamborough towards Tinemouth; but they that were in the new castle were aware of him, and went after him, and fought him, and wounded him, and afterwards took him. And of those that were with him some they slew, and some they took alive.''

The following four battles are noteworthy for some reason despite they aren't really related to the topic. I will write my thoughts briefly among the lines.

A.D. 837. ... Alderman Wulfherd fought at Hamton with thirty-three pirates, and after great slaughter obtained the victory, ... Alderman Ethelhelm also, with the men of Dorsetshire, fought with the Danish army in Portland-isle, and for a good while put them to flight; but in the end the Danes became masters of the field, and slew the alderman.
This is a battle with a twist: "put them to flight; but in the end the Danes" won. Very interesting. How did the battle go I wonder.
Also note the numbers: "thirty-three pirates" sounds awfully small, especially with the "great slaughter" phrase next to it. It will be more clear after the next battle.

A.D. 840. ... King Ethelwulf fought at Charmouth with thirty-five ship's-crews, and the Danes remained masters of the place.
See? The pirate is not a person at the previous battle but a ship. A longship carrying 10-60 sometimes maybe even more bloodthirsty northmen. Erm, eastman if we view it from England.

A.D. 992. ... Then the king and all his council resolved, that all the ships that were of any account should be gathered together at London; and the king committed the lead of the land-force to Alderman Elfric, and Earl Thorod, and Bishop Elfstan, and Bishop Escwy; that they should try if they could anywhere without entrap the enemy. Then sent Alderman Elfric, and gave warning to the enemy; and on the night preceding the day of battle he sculked away from the army, to his great disgrace. The enemy then escaped; except the crew of one ship, who were slain on the spot.
Not much of a battle but a good story about treachery. What could have been Alderman Elfric's motivation?

Bernd 01/16/2018 (Tue) 19:52:20 [Preview] No.13106 del
Now this part will be exciting.
The Year of the Three Battles and the Two Dead Kings
A.D. 1066. ... But, ere King Harold could come thither, the Earls Edwin and Morkar had gathered from their earldoms as great a force as they could get, and fought with the enemy. They made a great slaughter too; but there was a good number of the English people slain, and drowned, and put to flight: and the Northmen had possession of the field of battle. ... Thither came Harold, king of the English, unawares against them beyond the bridge; and they closed together there, and continued long in the day fighting very severely. ... There was slain Harald the Fair-hair'd, King of Norway, and Earl Tosty, and a multitude of people with them, both of Normans and English; and the Normans that were left fled from the English, who slew them hotly behind; until some came to their ships, some were drowned, some burned to death, and thus variously destroyed; so that there was little left: and the English gained possession of the field. But there was one of the Norwegians who withstood the English folk, so that they could not pass over the bridge, nor complete the victory. An Englishman aimed at him with a javelin, but it availed nothing. Then came another under the bridge, who pierced him terribly inwards under the coat of mail. And Harold, king of the English, then came over the bridge, followed by his army; and there they made a great slaughter, both of the Norwegians and of the Flemings. ... Meantime Earl William came up from Normandy ... This was then told to King Harold; and he gathered a large force, and came to meet him at the estuary of Appledore. William, however, came against him unawares, ere his army was collected; but the king, nevertheless, very hardly encountered him with the men that would support him: and there was a great slaughter made on either side. There was slain King Harold, and Leofwin his brother, and Earl Girth his brother, with many good men: and the Frenchmen gained the field of battle, as God granted them for the sins of the nation.
Well known story of course, the Battles of Fulford, Stamford Bridge and Hastings, but some snippets of useful info for us.
First battle, Earl Edwin and Merkar vs Hardrada and Tostig: "good number of the English people slain, and drowned, and put to flight" - the picture of drowning men resurfaced.
Second battle, H. Godwinson vs Hardrada and Tostig: "the Normans that were left fled from the English, who slew them hotly behind" - quite explicit confession. I can imagine King Harold's personal retinue not having any problem while slaughtering them casually.
Very nice the story of the lone Viking holding the bridge until he was overrun by Godwinson and his bodyguard.
Third battle, King Harold vs William the future conqueror: boooooooring.

Flights but not really what we're looking for.

A.D. 851. .. Alderman Ceorl, with the men of Devonshire, fought the heathen army at Wemburg, and after making great slaughter obtained the victory. ... came three hundred and fifty ships into the mouth of the Thames; the crew ... stormed Canterbury and London; putting to flight Bertulf, king of the Mercians, with his army; and then marched southward over the Thames into Surrey. Here Ethelwulf and his son Ethelbald, at the head of the West-Saxon army, fought with them at Ockley, and made the greatest slaughter of the heathen army that we have ever heard reported to this present day. There also they obtained the victory.

A.D. 993. This year came Anlaf with three and ninety ships ... and so to Maidon, where Alderman Britnoth came against him with his force, and fought with him; and there they slew the alderman, and gained the field of battle; ... Afterwards came the army to the mouth of the Humber; and there did much evil both in Lindsey and in Northumbria. Then was collected a great force; but when the armies were to engage, then the generals first commenced a flight; namely, Frene and Godwin and Frithgist.

350-390 ships. Now that's a nice number, maybe 10 000 warrior? Or much more?

Unquestionable support of the True Faith and hot grills are just two of many values these countries share not to mention economic similarities between North Brazil and Eastern Poland. Top level diplomats on both sides recognized the necessity of unification of the two countries. However Divine Signs imply the time isn't here yet the process has to be postponed until the alignment of the Statues of Christ is right.

You know what soap opera this is from, right?
The whole premise of that show is cultural enrichment.

<Due to the frequency of social problem topics treated in the series, a high proportion of the characters come from minority groups of diverse kind or live in patchwork relationships. From the Greek Restaurant with its family and a Vietnamese which were there from the beginning, characters and whole families with migration background have come and gone from Italy, Turkey, Eastern Europe etc. The current cast counts three male homosexuals, two of them living in marriage with an adopted son, and one female homosexual with a test-tube baby. There's a homeless man, a man in a wheelchair, a child with Down syndrome and so on.
<Fans of the series have proclaimed in mild jest that a "normal" family wouldn't survive the Lindenstraße. As if to prove this, the model bavarian family Stadler which moved to the street in September 2008 has only one member, the contrarian Grandfather, remaining in the street as of early 2013. He "occupies" a room in a commune otherwise populated by twens. His son, the family father, fled the street after the family mother had a love-affair with his brother. The mother then broke up with the brother and started a new affair with a young immigrant from the Balkans who hid his visa-less family in an apartment in the same house. The younger family daughter, who became a teenage mother after a Lindenstraße resident of her age purposely broke a condom, fell in love with the same immigrant and left the street in shock after finding out that he preferred her mother over herself. The mother and the immigrant then left the street together. The older teenage daughter had more luck and married a widely liked Lindenstraße resident in Las Vegas with whom she started a successful business in the street, only to suddenly die from a food poisoning originating in the Greek restaurant in February 2013.

I except they start fighting with each other soon, maybe even tomorrow, while ISIS will occasionaly bomb a car or a tank on both sides.

ISIS in eastern Homs are getting gradually removed and hopefully soon they will be containet in the east.

There was something about Israel entering Lebanon air space and Syria reacting with anti air defence but sadly I lost link to proofs.

It looks like rebels launched a counterattack behind the main SAA force slogging toward the airfield. They might want to ambitiously cut them off or they try to divert attention and bait the government forces to commit more units on that part of the front which could delaying the airfield's occupation and slow the northward advancement. This would give some time to the rebels for evacuating their forces from the eastern pocket.
Too bad I dunno how units are deployed.

So in the west on the Khuwayn front the rebels has the upper hand for now and on the east side of the Abu ad Duhur salient ISIS became active attacking both government and rebel forces. SAA advances stopped it seems after they gulped a big green blob NE from the airport. They want to control that road coming from Aleppo and cut through the rebels along it. Might be the only usable supply and transportation route there.

Catalans have been acting pretty edgily lately. (note the correct usage of adverb there, and not the adjective) Their parliament apparently wants to illegally hold a binding referendum on independence, which is against the Spanish constitution.

Let's see what the Russian proofsters report on that.

The other side of the story: what Madrid can do.
They should prove to the Catalan people that they do better within Spain than outside of it. Encourage people to have more personal and professional (work related) connections with other parts of Spain. Give opportunities to form these. Place greater emphasis on the similarities of the people of Spain, on the common historical background (preferably not on the Franco era), for this they might need some foreign scapegoats, a common enemy to unite against (this migration crap could be a good opportunity, just look how the dialogue changed between Northern Hungary and Hungary, too bad - for Spain - Spain won't play that card). This is hard walnut to crack as meanwhile all these they have to be understanding toward Catalans and their wish to be distinct from the other people of Spain.

I won't make a separate thread for this and it fits here what I wanna say.
The question of the Székely's autonomy is always a headache for some Romanian politicians. Now here's this dude, the Romanian PM himself, and says (I'll try to give an exact translation) during an interview when asked about the topic:
>My answer is the same, when they tried to fly the flag on the occasion of I don't know what day. Back then I made it clear, if that flag is gonna be waved by the wind, the responsibles will be waved next to it.
So basically he threatened with execution (by hanging).
Now the Hungarian people both in Transylvania and in Small Hungary didn't take it nicely, not the media, not the parties (not even the left-liberals), and of course not the government. Now the tune of the Romanian leadership is this: the Székely autonomy is anti-constitutional as it is a danger to the unity of the country which is guaranteed by the constitution.
And this is where this topic is related to this thread: they try to play the Spanish-Catalonian card. They use the same reason what Spain used when declared the referendum illegal: the Catalan independence is anti-constitutional because it threatens the unity of Spain. And this is what shows the negative IQ-ness of these "people". Probably they don't even know what autonomy is: Catalonia is an autonomous part of Spain, autonomy isn't a threat to anything.
What can we do (beside talking)? We can veto their joining to Schengen. And maybe that's it.
It's nice that the Fidesz has to do something because all (most of) the Hungarians in Transylvania vote for them during the elections and they could lose them or worse: they can vote for someone else. Next parliamentary election is in April.

Here's the story in short:

I'd like to tell you about the wonders of "Hungarian cottage cheese" or "körözött" (cca. circled) as we call it.
It's cottage cheese (cow or sheep or the mix of both, my favourit is a 50-50 mix but I usually eat pure cow's) mixed with red paprika powder, caraway/cumin, fine chopped onion, salt, butter and/or sour cream. I like it with butter and very little sour cream.
Eat it as a spread with tomatoes, radishes, paprika etc.

Blogpost. I have half a box of Twinings tea I only drink it occasionally as it's considered a more expensive and finer brand. I noticed however I crossed the expiration date. The tea's still fine so I decided I drink it fast. Now I drink 1,5 l Twinings Earl Gray on daily basis. Feels good, man.

I had the luck to eat some very good pickled mild chilis then bought another brand with other type of chili to test it out. It taste like paper with vinegar... Pfej

Peanut with or without salt?
By default I would choose salty, but without it it's a much more versatile food product. I could add into muh oats for example.

So the past week I utilized some leftovers for a dinner, some cooked rice and a chicken drumstick left from a meal which weren't entirely enough for one person. I also found a few weeks ago a can of kidney beans expired half year ago (the can seemed ok, both ends were deflated still) so I decided to combine the three into some kind of rice and beans.
I scraped the meat from the bone and tore/cut it into small chunks then added it into the rice and heated them up. I opened the can, the beans was in mint condition. The only thing was missed is the spices. I added some grill mix and also found a bag of cayenne pepper powder expired in 2014... we usually use Hungarian hot pepper or fresh hot paprika so it was continuously overlooked and finally forgotten, I don't even know which of my relatives could have bought it. So I opened the bag, tasted it and it was fine too.
The result was quite edible almost tasty. The meat didn't fit into the flavor for some reason.

I've never eat rice and beans before. Well it's not entirely true, some type of rice and beans are part of Hungarian cuisine. For example rice and peas (= rizibizi) is fairly common, sometimes other veggies (carrot, corn) go into it, or "layered green beans" is also a somewhat popular dish which contains rice, green beans and minced meat (with sour cream on top).

It's that tiem of the year again, Bernd. I'm not sure how the next two days will go, but I'll check back time to times, maybe even continue what I started when I'm not terribly busy... umm, so just as always.
I hope you'll get nice presents from Little Jesus, Bernd, or at least a bite of good food and some rest.

We associate Grandfather Frost with New Year more than Christmas, although it is one big holiday week so nobody cares.

There is two shitty photos I made at 7th when I was on walk in Moscow's center with a woman.

>Where did grandfather frost come from?

"Official" Ded Moroz now sits in Veliky Ustyug, but this is modern invention: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Veliky_Ustyug

Technically Ded Moroz is created as answer to Santa in 19th century on basis of old pagan winter deity/spirit Moroz/Morozko, and he just lives "in the forest". He wasn't friendly or evil, and acted like typical chtonic spirit, but modern image is mostly Santa-like, with required attributes like bag of gifts and spruce tree.

People rarely care about it though. But most of NY/Christmas items now are about Santa, red hats everywhere (Ded Moroz has blue clothes and different hat), blue are rare. Although reindeer symbolics are rare, only in small gifts (Ded Moroz also has no reindeers) and no chimney with socks - gifts are placed strictly under tree (or just given to person directly of course). People don't care about it either, although purists notice this every year with rants about "Santaization" of NY.

We are americanized now. I blame Coca-Cola.

Intradesting, thanks.

In region where I live we also have non-santa Christmas time old fart who gives good kids presents (and charcoal to bad ones). He's called Gwiazdor (translated as Starman, Christmas is sometimes translated as Gwiazdka - "Little Star" so his name probably comes from that). I have actually no clue where his story comes from, maybe I'll stop being lazy later and check wikipedia and report about my findings.
Gwiazdor is unique to my region, other parts of Poland get other present bringers. I also remember he had a wife or some sort of female helper, not sure, also I don't remember her name.
Anyway we're also a victim of americanisation and red hats and fat red dwarfs are everywhere (although I'm not sure if Gwiazdor looked differently in original, probably not).
I'm glad feast of st. Nickolaus is on 6th december and you have excuse to expect presents twice in this month, even if Nicky brings more modest ones.

Danke Walesa.

Nice grill on the right.

I think it was discussed back on 8 but our Father Winter concept is fairly new. Somewhere about the middle of the 19th century some poets used the term as an anthropomorphisation of winter, frost and snow. Then in the first half of the 20th was viewed as a person, then the communist regime pressured to use the name instead of St. Nick as some kind of an atheist Santa. I believe he doesn't have any old Hungarian roots and his figure was entirely loaned from Germans and Slavs. I should check folk tales but those are just way too many and I don't have access to enough collections.
